Please allow me to smack your optimistic asses right back to Earth. Constitutional bans against gay marriage passed in Arizona, Florida and California (wtf?). Arkansas pushed it a little farther and banned gay couples from adopting children. Both Nebraska and Colorado appear to be headed towards banning affirmative action. Ah, what a country . . . Obama gives me hope, but there is a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong fucking way to go. Ignorant motherfuckers! How the fuck did that happen in CA? – I was paying so much attention to the presidential race that I didn’t see that one coming at all.

P.S. – Beta immediately made me feel guilty for putting up that post. I guess I could have waited one day to let us bask in Obama’s win and feel good about ourselves, but positive feelings towards my fellow Americans confuse and puzzle me.

While your irritation may be justified, I do not fear.
    There’s no killing this buzz.
We just went from the hick’s Hitler to the most eloquent President we have had in a generation. and btw, he’s BLACK.
I had three different black women hug me at the polling station in N. St. Louis, tears streaming, when they found out we had driven from southern Illinois to walk their streets and help them vote.
These women saw their brothers and sisters hanging from trees, beaten and drug by cars, fire-hosed and spat upon at the hands of ignorant, fearful white men, and they personally have been brushed aside and cursed for their whole lives-the few stories they spoke in the short time we were there ripped my heart out.
And this white man just helped them elect a black man.
These women understand exclusion, and hope, and they support others who are excluded. So do a lot of Americans.
I watched hundreds of thousands come together to celebrate this occasion.
And hundreds of thousands sat at home, stewing in their hate and fear, some basking in their temporary victory against those who they see as different and wrong.
    Ying or Yang.
    Hope or Fear.
    Love or Hate.
    Teach or Shame.
    All or Some.
There is a lot of positive work to be done, but don’t let that ruin the work that has been done.

You’re right Hooch. Prop 8 just snuck up on me and bit me in the ass. All in all it was a great night. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

hooch, you should run for some kind of office. you’re usually, the most eloquent voice on the issues. christian, per usual, you’re a total buzz kill, albeit a well-informed, realistic one. i think, given the muck and mire we’ve been stuck in for some time, that the baby steps philosophy comes into play. however, last night didn’t feel so much like a baby step to me. it felt like a pretty good stride. not a leap as much as a jumping off place. something to build on. and, as for prop. 8, i wish somebody would ban heterosexual marriage (proposition 8.5) so i don’t ever get trapped in that institutional quagmire.
