the guest room

July 17th, 2008 by kevin

half way through july in a summer like no other. the ten-ish or so texas days i’ve spent at my dad’s place marks the longest period of uninterrupted time – by a longshot – that i’ve spent with any family member since i left high school. i’m on an extended vacation in lewisville, texas. and it’s fine. i’m not freaking out in close quarters with my kin. with no outlets to blow off steam, no friends to go tie one on with, no concerts, bars, events to attend, i’m strolling along. content. content to be resting, content to be cooking dinner every night, content to be walking lefty and going to the ymca and fucking around with this blog (music store 1.0 is up on the music page above, btw. it’s a disaster, but it is functional, and it looks kinda cool. i need to start over from scratch, but it took me about four hours to build the piece of shit that you see here, so before you criticize, remember you’re dealing with a special kind of slow adult here.)

anyway, july has obviously been (and will be) a period of reflection. historically, all the reflection i’ve done has been out of desperation, fueled by despair and crippling depression. we aren’t blessed with incredible foresight, the casper clan. we tie our shoes at the bottom of the stairwell with fractured fingers. that’s how you learn.

so this is quite new. refreshingly. i don’t feel good, necessarily, but i certainly don’t feel bad. not too high, not too low. staying in and sleeping in and farting around without any dire deadlines to meet. at least for a little while.

kurt vonnegut, at the end of his life, said that he truly believed, after his 80 odd years on this planet, that there was no higher power for humans to pursue than to fart around. tinker around on a project you’ve been thinking about for nearly a decade, make a pot roast, watch the extended family members watch tv (car mod programs, mostly), take a swim, crack a couplea coors lights, toss the tennis ball, repeat with subtle changes.

i will get bored, undoubtedly, but that’s ok, because this is all finite. for now, I’ll appreciate one of life’s rare, so easy, instances. stay simple and settled and slow and sleep soundly in the guest room.

Music page 2.0 is great. I spent about $400 testing it. Please don’t spend it all in one place . . . unless it is the track.

Thanks for your excellent QA help and advice, man. I ended up using an open source HTML editor called NVU to make the table. I still want to talk to you about a few things, but I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got at this point.
