purple and gold

August 25th, 2008 by kevin

new semester rung in today. i feel like i have a good group of students. having a little trouble, as always, getting the technology aspect of things up and rolling. the lsu writing program uses an online book, which is great, but getting everyone connected is challenging. i’ve never done it before either, so that isn’t helping matters … there’s also a new campus tool called moodle (the lsu equivalent of webct) that i have used to build the online component of my class. moodle was, of course, down all day. sigh. oh well … onward and upward.

in honor of the first day of school, a tribute to the purple and gold i saw on a neighborhood walk recently:

geaux tigers.

faye parked overhead for about two days.

not much wind, but rain, rain, man did it rain. somebody was thinking when they built this house up on blocks. i may buy a canoe.

everything seems more established now with school starting and tropical storms rolling in and what not. i go to the dog park and have a little local bar to hang out at and know the shortcut to the wal-mart. i guess i’m finally here. although i had profound topanga sadness for a second yesterday when i reassembled my drum set.

lots of memories wrapped up in that little kit. i rode the wild old bull for the first time as a drummer (hell, this is whiskey pete’s old kit), got pushed to the freaky magical edge by sean fayecullen on that kit, recorded the knights of monday with brendan on that kit, and played in my favorite band ever with tim o and darb and amilia and sean on that kit. lots of good memories.

it was also a very large part of the overall decor in my topanga house.

i remember having a conversation with sean one day. i can’t remember the specifics, but as i recall i was trying to reassure sean that some idea he had wasn’t as fucking crazy as he thought it was (even though it probably was, but that’s sean’s job in life – to come up with really crazy fucking ideas – and it’s the responsibility of his friends to encourage them at all costs.) anyway, i’m reassuring sean and he’s not buying it. he turns to me and says, “i don’t know, man. yeah, you don’t think it’s crazy, but you’re a guy with a drum set that takes up half of the only room of your house.”

true enough. like i tell my students, consider your sources.
