I LOVE THIS MAN! I met him once at a conference in Washington DC. He spoke. We listened. He shook hands afterwards. Then, one of my scholarship benefactors (yes, THE Justice Clarence Thomas of the pubic hair coke can debate) shook his hand while his adopted son crawled up Powell's leg like a monkey.

hooch ... poet and pundit, the gardener of grandeur, my very own red headed step-brother. yeah, this one pretty much put a cherry on top. spin it if you can, this is pretty much grade a rhetoric: honest, truthful, compelling, and effective. the argument has been made, and there's not a better one for this historical situation. from high above, with only two moves on the chessboard, we've just made that connection, that cerebral and soulful spark of realization, that one move leads to checkmate. that's a good feeling.

we try to watch a sunday morning show in the course of coffee and breakfast. this practice usually requires an antacid before the toast has even popped due to the nauseatingly unending negative twists on the most positive political movement of my relatively short life. but not even brokaw could kill my buzz this week.
when rachel maddow broke the news early in her show friday evening that colin powell was reportedly planning this announcement on one of these shows, i found myself transported to any of the many dec 23's of my childhood--two more nights until christmas morning.
it has been hard, as many of you know, to resist the obligatory cork popping on this one for a month or so, but the possibility that bush's very own mobile manufacturer of wmd's was coming home to help a brother out...let's just say i felt intoxicated.
i have now regained my composure a bit, and resigned myself to the truth that anticipation of a great moment is often as illuminating as the moment itself, the time when you can see the finish line, but still feel the burning in your lungs. we're almost there. we must not grow complacent. we must keep running kc. but we can enjoy the scenery.
