i’ve found myself in a pretty good little band. they’re called flatbed honeymoon. we played our second gig last night at this little listening room called the red dragon. one of those places that is a nonprofit ‘club’ and not a bar. but you can bring in whatever you want. there were about 150 seats with people’s names on them facing the stage. when the band plays, everyone just sits there and listens. a listening room. nobody yacking on cell phones or trying to get laid during your set. just … listening.
we played good. hit all the endings. it was an older crowd, and the people seemed to dig it. the headliner was a fucking powerhouse named jimmy lefave. jimmy played acoustic guitar and sang songs that ripped your fucking soul straight out your body. he was backed by a bassist, keyboardist, and, arguably, the greatest guitar player i have ever heard. i can’t remember his name, but he’s an austin cat, and he supposedly taught stevie ray vaughn a few things. apparently, he didn’t teach him everything … at one point they played this rephrased version of bob dylan’s ‘just like a woman.’ the notes that guy was pulling out of his guitar had me heaving. everyone. was. crying! it was a trip … one of the heaviest performances i’ve seen in my life. i got completely exhausted at the set break (thanks to jimmy’s music and eric’s bottle of jack daniels) and had to split. my friend bridget showed up five minutes after i left. sorry, bridget!
i made $62. between gigs like that and the free fried chicken at teddy’s, i’m on my way to living the proverbial high life. (teddy was there last night, btw …)
other random notes:
1. i’m eating way too much fried chicken down here. it’s just so good. spicy fried chicken. god damn.
2. i always suspected it when i lived out there, but hearing about california burning down every fall is a drag for the rest of the country. same ole story, folks. come up with a new disaster already …
3. i found a guy who wrote a critical book of essays on charles bukowski called against the american dream (published by black sparrow) that has changed everything.
4. i’m listening to the band’s ‘the weight’ right now. that’s always a good four minutes of life whenever that song is playing. never gets old.
5. my cable is out, but only in the living room. they gotta come out and inspect. internet works. tv in bedroom (never been watched) works. dunno.
6. anthony morrow, undrafted rookie, went for 37 points last night for our golden state warriors.
7. nader might be on a plane to nyc right now. i’ve been in contact with him, and he’s ready to fuck shit up on the stern show tomorrow.
8. something in me always wants the list to make it to 10.
9. i’m eager for thanksgiving. i might have to cook a cajun turducken. yes, that’s the turkey stuffed with a duck stuffed with a chicken. there is no fucking around down here, folks.
10. my friend jen beck has a friend who has been eating mushrooms regularly and blogging about it. i recommend that exercise to all of you who get bored now and again. apparently, he sits in hotel rooms and just loses his mind. i can’t imagine that. the only way i could be in a hotel room on psychedelics is if the hotel room was filled five feet deep with bouncy balls.
